A spec sheet can tell you ply and GSM, but it can't tell you how a tissue actually behaves in someone's hand. Before you commit to a bulk order — and lock in weeks or months of supply — it's worth spending ten minutes with a physical sample. Here are five practical checks worth running, and how to run them.
1. Softness and feel
This is the most obvious check but still worth doing deliberately rather than casually. Rub a sheet between your fingers and compare it directly against a sample you already trust, or against a competing quote. Softness is subjective, but differences between products are usually easy to feel once you compare them side by side rather than in isolation.
2. Tensile strength — wet and dry
Dry strength matters for handling and dispensing without tearing. Wet strength matters even more for toilet paper and any tissue used near water or spills. A simple test: wet a corner of the sheet and gently tug it. Paper that disintegrates instantly under light pressure will frustrate users and lead to higher consumption as people reach for more sheets to compensate.
3. Lint and dust shedding
Rub a dry sheet firmly against a dark surface or a black cloth. Excess fibre or dust left behind is a sign of shedding, which shows up as visible lint on hands, surfaces and clothing — a common complaint in office and hospitality settings. Lower-quality pulp or looser bonding between plies tends to shed more, so this is a quick and reliable differentiator between samples.
4. Brightness and whiteness consistency
Lay a few sheets from different points in the roll side by side in natural light. Consistent brightness across the roll signals a controlled manufacturing process; visible variation from sheet to sheet often indicates inconsistent pulp quality or bleaching, which can look unprofessional in guest-facing dispensers even if it doesn't affect function.
5. Sheet-to-sheet consistency within the roll
Unroll a length of the product and check thickness, perforation spacing and sheet size at several points — beginning, middle and end. Rolls that vary noticeably in thickness or sheet size partway through indicate inconsistent production, which translates into unpredictable performance and dispenser jams once you're using it at scale.
Practical Tip
Always request a physical sample before placing a bulk order, and test it in the actual environment it will be used in — not just at a desk. A tissue that feels fine in isolation can behave differently once it's in a busy washroom dispenser or a high-humidity kitchen.
